Every December for more than thirty years, People to People has gathered letters from low-income children in Rockland County asking “Santa” to fulfill their holiday wishes.
The children’s requests are sometimes just like any other child’s, asking for the coolest toy, a doll, music or a bike.
The requests always include clothing — warm coats, sneakers, new underwear.
Sometimes children ask for what their family needs most:
- a job
- a house of their own
- enough food for the winter months.
After we receive the letters, we invite our generous donors to come and choose a letter and do what they can to fulfill that child’s wishes.

Anna, a thirteen year old girl, wrote her first letter to our “Santa”.
Dear Santa:
I am thirteen years old. My family has never had to ask for help before.
My mom and my dad have always had okay jobs and we were fine. Last year my mom got sick and she had to stop working. The bills from the doctors are very high. Even though my dad still is working, we don’t have enough money always to buy the things we need.
My teacher told me I could write to you because what I really want for Christmas is some new clothes.
My old ones are getting really small and sometimes the kids at school make fun of me.
I know my mom and dad feel really bad that they don’t have money for all the things I want, and they said we should be happy to all be together for Christmas.
I don’t want to ask them for anything because I know it will just make them sad. Like I said, my teacher thought maybe you could help us this year, and that would make us have a happy holiday.
Merry Christmas,
Anna
P.S. if it is possible, my mom doesn’t have a coat for the winter. Thanks. |
